Barricade 2012
BARRICADE
Directed by Orit Azaz, Music- Peter Reynolds, Creative Producer -Ali Williams, Assist Director- Paul Evans, Assistant producer- Camille Beaumier
Spectacular circus, spine-tingling aerial, stunning imagery, thrilling live music and theatrical chaos in celebration of the mighty human effort required to overcome our fear...
Two trucks block the town square. They disgorge their contents of wires and tyres and assemble a structure that divides the square in two - an obstacle to normal paths and daily routines.
Suddenly, the wind is rising. A wind of change. People build a barricade to defend themselves from the storm. They hurry to bring tyres, ladders and other objects in impossible volumes. The barricade they build, a spectacular aerial playground, sets the scene for a maelstrom of breathtaking circus images, powerful stories of separation and unity, dangerous acts of creation and destruction. A tightrope walker holds his megaphone aloft, a handful of acrobats climb never ending ladders, aerialists swing from impossible heights. In a turbulent world of tyres and ladders, smoke without fire, devilish newspapers and smashing doors, their stories of personal and universal fear, courage, and hope unfold through alarming, absurd and moving circus images.
In 2011, Barricade played to over 30,000 people across France and Great Britain.
2012 was the second year of the ZEPA partnership ( See BARRICADE 2011 for info) and the show was recreated with most of the 2011 cast but with some new trainees joining. We were able to enhance and develop elements of the show as well as sharpen the overall dramaturgy.
Watch our trailer here: www.youtube.com/nofitstatearchive or you can order a book about the Zepa project. Published in the Carnets de rue Collection from publishing company l’Entretemps, " Over the Channel" is the bilingual book relating to four years during which the banks of the Channel have become a unique space for artistic and cultural exchanges.
British writer John Ellingsworth and French writer Marc Villemain both tell the creative process of the two large scale productions supported by the ZEPA network, French company Générik Vapeur’s Waterlitz and Welsh NoFit State Circus’s Barricade.
The book is fleshed out with meaningful images and by testimonies from the public, the artists or the key players of the nine regions involved, including from the organisations members of the ZEPA network itself.
